Description
Beetroot, scientifically known as Beta vulgaris, is a versatile and vibrant root vegetable celebrated for its sweet and earthy flavor.
Benefits
Beetroots, recognized for their earthy flavor and superfood status, provide health benefits including lower blood pressure and improved athletic performance due to their high folate content. With just 44 calories, 1.7 grams of protein, and significant levels of nutrients like manganese, copper, and potassium, beets are a nutritious addition to the diet.
Planting
Plant beetroot seeds outdoors between mid-April and late June, in a shallow drill, at a depth of 1cm. Space the seeds 10cm apart with 30cm between rows, and maintain consistent watering while keeping the area free from weeds. For optimal sweetness, harvest when the roots reach the size of a golf ball, as larger roots may become woody. Beets, being cold-tolerant, can be directly sown outdoors, placing seeds ½-inch deep, 1 to 2 inches apart, in rows spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart. Ensure the soil remains moist for successful germination.
